Oxbow has a long history of being strong environmental stewards. Our roots began in renewable energy when we planned, built, financed and operated geo-thermal power plants that tap deep into the earth for natural steam. Oxbow’s power
plants in the United States, the Philippines and Costa Rica received numerous awards for providing clean, reliable and renewable energy to the world marketplace.
The company has continued its tradition of providing an affordable, efficient energy supply while developing a diverse carbon product portfolio.
Oxbow Mining’s Elk Creek Mine in Somerset, Colorado, for example, is one of only a handful in the United States that produces high BTU, low sulfur, low mercury coal. This super-compliant coal, which meets the most stringent state and federal emission limits, provides a clean burning, in-expensive fuel source to the nation’s energy market. The Colorado Mining Association recognized Oxbow Mining for its reclamation work on the A Gulch steep slope project shown in the photos above.
Gunnison Energy Corporation, (“GEC”) a natural gas producer, is providing clean burning natural gas to the United States energy market. Like its sister corporation, Gunnison has received industry awards for water quality protection and its work with local communities in the Rocky Mountains. The beautiful meadow shown in the picture to the right is all that is visible of the Rocky Mountain Pipeline today. This is an example of GEC's commitment to minizimizing the implact of operations to the environment.
Oxbow Carbon & Minerals Holdings Inc., (“OCM”) the world’s largest importer and exporter of petroleum coke, remains firmly committed to the company’s stringent environmental policy. Much of this refining by-product is converted into an efficient fuel source for the power industry; the rest is converted into calcined coke which is used in the production of aluminum. In addition to our carbon based portfolio, OCM is also researching bio-mass projects in North and South America and Europe.
Oxbow Calcining, which owns and operates five plants in the United States and Argentina, currently supplies waste heat to cogeneration plants at our facilities in Port Arthur, Texas and Lemont, Illinois. We are exploring the possibility of constructing similar plants at our other sites. These plants use waste heat from the calcining process to produce steam or electricity thus eliminating emissions that would be emitted from new sources. Recently, Oxbow Calcining has finished constructing a multi-million dollar storage facility at our Argentina plant that will not only eliminate dust, but make it one of the cleanest calciners in the world.
And Oxbow is not stopping there. The company has also invested in advanced gasification that will convert petroleum coke into hydrogen and carbon-based gases.
