is driven from executive management in West Palm Beach, FL throughout all staff levels in each of the domestic and international locations where Oxbow is active. The message is clear – the safety and health of people and the environment where they work and live are a critically important element in the continuing success of all Oxbow companies. Oxbow goes beyond minimum safety standards and strives for continuous improvement in all aspects of our work. The goal is to ensure our workforce has healthy and safe places to work and ultimately eliminate all accidents.
Oxbow believes that safety is a shared responsibility, one to which everybody must contribute. The ideas, attitudes and practices of management and staff must be bound together and directed towards cooperatively maintaining a safe workplace. Individually, industrial plant records clearly demonstrate the Oxbow companies’ success in its focus on safety. Domestically, where safety may be illustrated in terms of incidents that result in time away from work (the OSHA defined lost time case or lost time accident - LTA), Oxbow’s current average is an impressive 4 years without an LTA and ranges upward at several plants to a remarkable 8 and 11 years. In fact, only 3 LTAs have been recorded in over 4 million labor hours logged at Oxbow’s domestic industrial facilities since the beginning of 2004. And the LTA rate at our Elk Creek Coal Mine remains well below the national average for the coal industry.
International safety standards, regulations and enforcement may vary considerably as a function of the country and region where industrial facilities are located and may be more or less stringent than those found in the USA. Regardless of location, Oxbow’s international industrial facilities closely adhere to the corporate safety program and are held to the same high standards. As with any of Oxbow’s facilities, the regulatory framework for health and safety within each country sets a baseline upon which Oxbow builds.
