Unlike petroleum coke which emanates from the oil refining process, metallurgical coke is derived from coal. As a result, it possesses higher ash than petroleum coke products. Metallurgical coke is primarily used in iron and steel
industry processes such as blast furnaces, sinter plants, and foundries to reduce iron ore to iron. Over ninety percent of the total metcoke produced is used in these blast furnace operations. China is the world’s largest producer of metallurgical coke. Oxbow distributes metallurgical coke sourced from China to steel companies in the United States, Canada, Mexico and Europe.
In addition to Blast Furnace Coke, Oxbow also purchases, screens, and distributes various sized metallurgical coke products to markets such as ferroalloy production, smelting, calcium carbide production, metal recovery furnaces, and metal recovery kilns.
